Acadiana Center for the Arts
Our Story
Our goal: uplift thousands of young people, improve the civic gem of Lafayette, and employ a local culture bearer - all at the same time!
AcA is a jewel of the community—worthy of our incredible arts and culture, representative of the diversity of all Acadiana. One of our functions is to TEACH our culture—to young people, to adults, and to everyone that wants to be part of the vitality of our region.
As a critical part of that AcA’s arts outreach programs work in 87 schools across Acadiana, serving over 43,000 young people each year who would otherwise not have access to the creative aspects of their own culture.
This is a big mission, and the cornerstone of that work is the Dora Rauschenberg Education Studio, a classroom, workshop space, and hub of creativity for this sprawling program.
Our project for SOLA Giving Day is to renovate and update the Dora Rauschenberg Education Studio, which has not been improved since the construction of AcA in 2004.
With $15,000, AcA will build out new cabinets to house art supplies and tools, replacing temporary shelving with a 27’ x 8’ wall of stained wood cabinets built by master cabinet-marker and 3-time GRAMMY Award-nominated musician Roddie Romero. As we meet and exceed our goal, we’ll add stretch goals to add all the extras that these young people deserve.
What a great opportunity to uplift thousands of young people, to improve the civic gem of Lafayette, and to employ a local culture bearer—all at the same time!
Project Overview:
AcA will focus its SOLA Giving Day efforts on renovating the Dora Rauschenberg Education Studio, a multipurpose classroom at AcA sorely in need of an update. Each year, more than 2,000 young people have classes in this space during summer camps, field trips, and other outreach activities. They deserve a clean, updated, and not junky space to work out their creative muscles.
$15,000 Project Budget Overview:
1. Contract Roddie Romero to build a 27’ x 8’ wall of wooden stained cabinets in the Dora Rauschenberg Education Studio to serve as storage for art supplies ($12,000)
2. Repaint (white) the 1,000 SF studio space ($2,000)
3. Professionally clean and refinish the paint-stained floors of the room ($1,000)
Stretch Goals if we exceed the $15,000 goal—(in this order):
1. Update lighting for best visibility in the studio environment ($2,500)
2. Purchase and install high-quality ceiling-mounted projector for displaying artwork being studied in classes and workshops ($5,000)
3. Replace eight work tables and 30 chairs used for workshops, classes, and field trips ($5,000)
